Malopolska patchwork / Patchwork małopolski
AS Gallery, Krakow PL, 2014
Artists: Marta Sala, Grzegorz Siembida, Barbara Strykowska, Dominika Szczałba; Curator: Marta Sala and Wesołe Kumoszki.
The Malopolska patchwork is based on Artistic Research in the rural regions of Southern Poland. The exhibition places tradition in a new context and explores a cultural mixture, a patchwork of the old and the new, the local and the global. The common installation was inspired by the traditional crafts, local history and regional art and recycled them with the city’s pop cultural waste.
The exhibition was opened with a tasting of regional dishes, prepared by Koło Gospodyn Wiejskich, “Wesołe Kumoszki”; (Association of Farmers Women of Paszkówka). The project was co-financed by the Małopolska voivodship and organized under the honorary patronage of Marek Sowa, the marshal of the Małopolska voivodship.
Works based mostly on a flower pattern from the Zalipie School (Zalipie is a village known for its flower decorations). The belief in symmetry and the fear of chaos present in folk art stand alongside various ideas of neoplasticism and Bauhaus art (use of simplified geometric forms, primarily basic colours and machine productions). The strict order was slightly disturbed e.g. by a shift of the composition from the central axis.
